Healthy Schools -  Healthy Schools Report 2024

We are delighted to have  maintained our Healthy Schools Status and  MindMate Friendly status following a validation visit from the Local Authority.

Some of the strengths identified during the assessment include:

▪ The warm, caring ethos of this school is very apparent.
▪ The school invests in health and wellbeing and the Healthy Schools programme continues to have a high profile. The personal development and meeting the needs of each child are key to the ethos of the school and staff work hard to do this.
▪ The school celebrates the ‘whole’ child; good relationships are key here and strengths and achievements are celebrated. Interactions that I observed over the morning were all warm, supportive and respectful.
▪ The pupils are a credit to the school and the behaviour I saw on the day was excellent. Pupils were happy, confident, engaged, polite and friendly and demonstrated an excellent knowledge of health and wellbeing.
▪ Parents clearly trust in the school and feel their children are safe and nurtured by all members of staff.
▪ All stakeholders reported that communication is good across school. Parents are grateful for the informative newsletters and curriculum overviews they receive. On a one to one level they feel school keeps them very well informed about their child’s progress. Staff have regular briefings as well as staff meetings.
▪ Pupils were enthusiastic about the food they are served at lunchtime. The cook is very much part of the school team, and the Year 6 pupils enjoy preparing the fruit and vegetables with her for the meals and the salad bar.
▪ The physical environment is very well kept. Displays are informative and attractive, all areas in and out of school are clean and tidy and the pupils benefit from a range of outdoor equipment, including an outdoor gym.

School Council

At the start of the school year, children across school participated in a democratic vote to choose the two children who will represent their class at School Council this year.

As well as listening to suggestions and ideas from classes and bringing them to our meetings, school councillors will get involved in lots of areas of school during the 2024-25 academic year including developing the outdoor classroom and fund raising for a local charity.

Wellbeing Ambassadors

At Guiseley Primary School, we recognise the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing for all our pupils to lead a happy, healthy and productive life. It is important for pupils to have a voice, be able to contribute ideas and influence how to improve the wellbeing of their peers and the wider school community. We are proud to have a group of children appointed by their peers as Wellbeing Ambassadors to help drive through positive change and support the whole school community.
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors help people feel good about themselves, solve problems and are a friendly face to offer support.  The Ambassadors have the responsibility of leading and promoting wellbeing throughout the school. They drive the message forward and release the stigma around talking about challenging feelings and encourage people to talk. Wellbeing Ambassadors provide feedback on what’s working well and highlight any gaps in our whole-school approaches to wellbeing.
The role of our Wellbeing Ambassadors also includes:
  • Helping to support other pupils with health and wellbeing issues they may be experiencing
  • Looking for examples of wellbeing around school and sharing these at meetings
  • Promoting positive mental health & raising awareness of mental health problems
  • Sharing good news stories
  • Sharing wellbeing techniques with everyone in class.
  • Supporting and organising specific events & celebrating mental health awareness days

Sports Leaders

At Guiseley Primary, children have the opportunity to apply to become a Sports Leader; it is a role which brings great responsibility and enjoyment. It is a role in which the older children are able to become role models within the school as well as develop their basic coaching skills in a range of sports.

Our Sports Leaders support the lunchtime team by ensuring that playground games and activities are set up every lunchtime and encourage other children to play co-operatively. They meet throughout the year, to look at how activities and sports can be improved across school.

The children play an invaluable role in encouraging others to try new games and sports and to feel that they belong in our school family.

Sports Leaders develop essential skills for life such as:

  • Communication skills
  • Valuable team working skills
  • Ability to lead others
  • Greater understanding of responsibility
  • Innovative and creativity skills
  • Respect for others
